Africa: Korle-Bu

In Ghana, over 600 children are born each year with cleft lip and palate (CLP). With fewer than 10 plastic surgeons for a country of 23 million people, access to treatment is severely limited.

In 2002, TFW partnered with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra to provide treatment for those in need.

The project provides comprehensive cleft care, including:

  • Cleft lip/cleft palate surgery
  • Nutritional support
  • Dental care
  • Speech therapy
  • Counseling.

With many children coming from remote and rural areas of the country, TFW also provides travel and accommodation expenses for those in need.

Latest Progress

To date, this project has treated over 700 children in need.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Ethiopia, located in Eastern Africa, is a vast country with a population of over 76 million. The country is marked by a lack of access to healthcare, with only 1 surgeon for every 350,000 people.

Yekatit 12/ALERT Project

In 2007, TFW joined forces with doctors at Ethiopia's Yekatit 12 and ALERT hospitals to provide children in need with cleft lip and palate treatment.

Surgery Ethiopia

This is the only team in Ethiopia providing comprehensive cleft lip and palate treatment, including:

  • Plastic surgery
  • ENT
  • Speech and Language therapy (SLT)
  • Dentistry
  • Orthodontics

In a vast country such as Ethiopia, TFW recognizes the challenge of reaching children living in remote areas. In addition to medical care, TFW supports the travel and accommodation for children coming from outside the capital.
