Transforming Lives in Ethiopia
Ethiopia, located in Eastern Africa, is a vast country with a population of over 76 million. The country is marked by a lack of access to healthcare, with only 1 surgeon for every 350,000 people.
Yekatit 12/ALERT Project
Yekatit 12 Hospital, Ethiopia
In 2007, TFW joined forces with doctors at Ethiopia's Yekatit 12 and ALERT hospitals to provide 100 children in need with cleft lip and palate treatment.
Yekatit is a unique project in Ethiopia because it adopts a team approach to cleft lip and palate treatment, including the following fields:
- Plastic surgery,
- ENT,
- Speech and Language therapy (SLT),
- Dentistry,
- Orthodontics.
Ongoing Surgery, Ethiopia
The project aims to provide access to CLP treatment for all patients, including those living in poverty, and in rural areas. In order to do so, TFW has pledged to support the travel and accommodation for children coming from remote areas. Additionally, a public information campaign will build national awareness about CLP and the treatment available at the centre.
