Korle-Bu, Ghana
In Ghana, over 600 children are born each year with cleft lip and palate (CLP). With less than 10 plastic surgeons for a country of 23 million people, access to treatment is severely limited.
In 2002, TFW linked up with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra to provide treatment for those in need.
This project partners with local specialists, and seeks to improve access to surgery and rehabilitation for CLP in Ghana, regardless of a patient's ability to pay.
The project provides comprehensive CLP care, including:
- Cleft lip/cleft palate surgery
- Nutritional support
- Dental care
- Speech therapy
- Counseling.
With many children coming from remote and rural areas of the country, TFW also provides travel and accommodation expenses for those in need.
Latest Progress
To date, this project has treated over 420 children in need. This year, the team has partnered with a countrywide network of community workers through Liliane Fonds, a Dutch organization promoting rehabilitation for children with disabilities. This partnership will increase the referral of children living in particularly remote areas of the country.
